Who Was Elijah? Verses on Prayer/Anointing
This is a continuation of a series called Prepare to Win. We have looked at A PREPARED ARMY. This page is the beginning of A PRAYING ARMY
“THE PRAYER of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” James 5: 16.
ELIJAH WAS A MAN OF PRAYER
James 5:16b‑18. “THE PRAYER of a righteous man is powerful and effective. Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.”
We may ask ourselves, what was the secret of Elijah’s successful prayer life?
ELIJAH PRAYED WITH THE ANOINTING OF GOD
We know that Elijah was anointed by God, for Elisha asked, “Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit.” 2 Kings 2:9.
Also, in Luke 1:17 when the angel is speaking to Zechariah about the coming of John the Baptist: “He will go before the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah.”
WE HAVE THE ANOINTING
The anointing is within us.
The anointing is God’s presence. It is God on flesh enabling flesh to do things that are impossible for flesh to do.
The word “Christ” in the Greek, is translated into English as anointed or the Anointed One.
“Christ (the Anointed One and His anointing) in you, the hope of glory.” Colossians 1:27.
“I have been crucified with Christ (the Anointed One) and I no longer live, but Christ (the Anointed One and His anointing) lives in me.” Galatians 2:20.
“He gave us the very life of Christ (the Anointed One and His anointing) Himself, the same new life which He quickened him.” Ephesians 2:5. (Amp.)
The Anointing is upon us.
You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you..”. Acts 1:8.
Elijah’s anointing was an action anointing – let us consider how it applies to us.
A. The anointing flowed because Elijah was listening.
“Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you.” Proverbs 1:23. (NAS.)
B. The anointing flowed because Elijah was obedient.
“We are witnesses of these things and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.” Acts 5:32.
C. The anointing flowed because Elijah was totally dependent on God.
The secret to praying with the Elijah anointing is to abide in Christ the Anointed One. We will deal more specifically on how to abide in Christ, in the next chapter.
“The anointing which you received from Him, abideth in you.” 1 John 2:27. (Amp.)
“I am the vine , you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it will be done for you.” John 15:5,7. (NKJ.)
D. The anointing flowed because Elijah’s heart was God’s heart.
Elijah’s heart was one of restoration.
John the Baptist had the Elijah anointing for a ministry of restoration
Matthew 17:11,12. (NAS.) “He (Jesus) answered and said, “Elijah is coming and will restore all things; but I say to you, that Elijah already came, and they did not recognise him.” This speaks of John the Baptist as found in Matthew 11:13,14.
Jesus was anointed for a ministry of restoration
In Luke 4:18-20, Jesus read from the scroll of the prophet Isaiah and concluded in verse 21 that this Scripture was now fulfilled. (Amp.)
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because he has anointed Me (the Anointed One, the Messiah) to preach good news (the Gospel) to the poor; He has sent Me to announce release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind; to send forth delivered those who are oppressed – who are downtrodden bruised, crushed and broken down with calamity; to proclaim the accepted and acceptable year of the Lord – the day when salvation and the free favours of God profusely abound.”
We have the Elijah anointing for a ministry of restoration
“See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and smite the land with a curse.” Malachi 4:5‑6.
Elijah stood as Moses did in the breach, between the people and God.
Those with the Elijah anointing are to stand there too:-
1. To intercede – that the Lord will not smite the land with a curse.
2. To bring the people to repentance – restoration to God and man to man.
The same Spirit that anointed Jesus as told in Luke 4:18 and is demonstrated in Acts 10:38-40, is living within every child of God to bring deliverance to all oppressed of the devil. It is a yoke destroying anointing.
“It shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken way from off thy shoulder and the yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.” Isaiah 10:27 (KJV).
