Biblical Understanding of Healing

HEALING WAS CENTRAL TO THE MINISTRY OF JESUS

“Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people.” Matthew 4:23

 JESUS DIED FOR OUR HEALING

When Jesus died on the Cross he, “Took our suffering on himself and carried our diseases.” Matthew 8:17

“Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.” 1 Peter 2:24

HEALING IS NOW ASSIGNED TO ALL BELIEVERS

“These signs will follow those who believe:they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” Mark 16: 15 &18

Ministering in the name of Jesus to the sick, with laying on of hands, is for “those who believe”. This includes every member of the body of Christ.

HEALING AND THE NAME OF JESUS

Acts 3:1-10

“Peter and John went to the Temple one afternoon to take part in the three o’clock prayer service. As they approached the Temple, a man lame from birth was being carried in. Each day he was put beside the Temple gate, the one called the Beautiful Gate, so he could beg from the people going into the Temple.  When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for some money.   Peter and John looked at him intently, and Peter said, “Look at us!” The lame man looked at them eagerly, expecting some money. But Peter said, “I don’t have any silver or gold for you. But I’ll give you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!”  Then Peter took the lame man by the right hand and helped him up. And as he did, the man’s feet and ankles were instantly healed and strengthened.  He jumped up, stood on his feet, and began to walk!”

Peter said to the lame man, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” Acts 3:6

WE MUST HAVE FAITH IN THE NAME OF JESUS

“And His Name, through and by faith in His name, has made this man whom you see and recognize well and strong. (Yes) the faith which is through and by Him (Jesus) has given the man this perfect soundness (of body) before you all.”   Acts 3:16 Amp.

Faith in the Name of Jesus will release the power of God in you!

 HEALING AND GOD’S POWER

Believe when you touch someone that God’s power is being transferred to them.

Jesus heals a paralyzed man: “The power of the Lord was present to heal them.” Luke 5:17

Peter said to the lame man, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” Acts 3:6

I don’t have any silver or gold for you, but I’ll give you what I have.

What did Peter and John have? They had received the power of the Holy Spirit.

You have the power of the Holy Spirit dwelling in you?

You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.”  Acts 1:8

“I pray that God will open your minds to see his truth. Then you will know the hope that he has chosen us to have. You will know that the blessings God has promised his holy people are rich and glorious. And you will know that God’s power is very great for us who believe. It is the same as the mighty power he used to raise Christ from death and put him at his right side in the heavenly places.”  Ephesians 1:18-20  ERV.

“With God’s power working in us, he can do much, much more than anything we can ask or think of.”  Ephesians 3:20 ERV.

HEALING AND LAYING ON OF HANDS

Throughout scripture we see how God used the laying on of hands to transfer something.

LAYING ON OF HANDS IN OLD TESTAMENT – let’s look at a couple of examples

  • The laying on of hands to transfer sins:

He is to lay both hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the wickedness and rebellion of the Israelites – all their sins – and put them on the goats head. He shall send the goat away into the desert in the care of a man appointed for the task” Leviticus 16:21,22

By laying the hands upon the animals their sins were transferred to them.

  •  The laying on of hands to impart spiritual wisdom:

“Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him…….” Deuteronomy 34:9

Moses imparted the spiritual wisdom to Joshua through the laying on of hands.

LAYING ON OF HANDS IN NEW TESTAMENT – A couple of examples; hands were laid on to impart the Holy Spirit and spiritual gifts but we are going to look at the laying on of hands to heal the sick.

  • The laying on of hands to minister healing:

Lord Jesus and apostles practiced the laying on of hands again and again to heal the sick.

“They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” Mark 16:18b

Healing flows with the transferring of the power of the Holy Spirit. Mark 16:18 says, lay hands on the sick and they SHALL recover.

 HEALING AND AUTHORITY

JESUS HAS BEEN GIVEN ALL AUTHORITY

In Matthew 28:18 we read how Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth.”

“He (Jesus) called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases.” Luke 9:1

GOD’S CHILDREN HAVE BEEN GIVEN AUTHORITY

“But to as many as did receive and welcome Him, He gave the authority (power, privilege, right) to become the children of God, that is, to those who believe in (adhere to, trust in, and rely on) His name.”  John 1:12

AUTHORITY TO SPEAK THINGS INTO AND OUT OF EXISTENCE

God spoke things into existence. “God gives life to the dead and calls into being that which does not exist. Romans 4:17

The Bible tells us in Ephesians 5:1, “Be imitators of God as dear children.”

The Bible says that, “Whoever says to the mountain…does not doubt at all in his heart but believes that what he says will take place, it will be done for him.” Mark 11:23

Command, using an authorative strong voice, the dysfunctional parts in the body to be restored or recreated according to God’s perfect design and anything that should not be in the body to be removed, for it is written: Jesus came to undo the works of the devil.

HEALING AND FAITH

Where there is more faith and expectation more happens. God looks for faith!!

Warning! Don’t turn the principle of faith into a law as it can stop us and hinder us being used by God.

If we remember this, there will be healing that occurs regardless of our faith as God loves to use the week, insignificant and disqualified to bring Glory to Himself!!

Remember that we have mentioned before that supernatural faith comes from God. Hebrews 12:2 says “…Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith”. And Romans 12:3 says ” … God has allotted to each a measure of faith.”

These two verses clearly tell us that faith is not something that we do or a presence of mind that we develop, but that faith is a gift from God.

Romans 10:17 says ” … faith comes from hearing and hearing by the word of Christ.”

So faith is a gift from God that we receive through the word of Christ.

GOD LOOKS FOR FAITH

Jesus turned around, and when he saw her he said, “Daughter, be encouraged! Your faith has made you well.” And the woman was healed at that moment. Matthew 9:22 NLT

The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up.” James 5:15

WE PRAY WITH FAITH IN THE NAME OF JESUS

Through faith in the name of Jesus, this man was healed—and you know how crippled he was before. Faith in Jesus’ name has healed him before your very eyes.” Acts 3:16 NLT.

HEALING AND THE WORD

“He sent His word and healed them.” Psalm 107:20

I often use the Word of God when praying for people, particularly if I discern that their sickness is an attack of the devil. Such scriptures as: It is written: “The Son of Man was manifested that he might undo the works of the devil.” Therefore, I undo the works of the devil in the form of….

 HEALING AND LOVE/COMPASSION

“Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. “Be healed!” Mark 1:41 NLT

Our motivation for healing must be love.

[That you may really come] to know [practically, through experience for yourselves] the love of Christ, which far surpasses mere knowledge; that you may be filled [through all your being] unto all the fullness of God [may have the richest measure of the divine Presence, and become a body wholly filled and flooded with God Himself]! Ephesians 3:19 Amp.

 HEALING AND CONFESSION

Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” James 5:16 NLT

HEALING AND THE ANOINTING OF OIL

“Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.” James 5:14

Jesus sent out the twelve disciples on a mission and, “They went out and preached that people should repent.  They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.” (Mark 6:12- 13).

In biblical times oil was commonly used as a healing agent (Luke 10:34). But when used by the early Christians for anointing purposes it was merely a symbolic reminder to God’s healing power.

Today as then, the anointing oil itself has no healing power. Healing takes place by the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 10:38), of whom oil is a symbol (Zechariah 4:4-6).

HEALING AND MOVEMENT

Faith is not complete without action.

There are several examples in the Bible where their faith was tested with action. Here is one example – Jesus healed a man with withered right hand.

Luke 6:6-10

On another Sabbath day, a man with a deformed right hand was in the synagogue while Jesus was teaching.  The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees watched Jesus closely. If he healed the man’s hand, they planned to accuse him of working on the Sabbath.  But Jesus knew their thoughts. He said to the man with the deformed hand, “Come and stand in front of everyone.” So the man came forward.  Then Jesus said to his critics, “I have a question for you. Does the law permit good deeds on the Sabbath, or is it a day for doing evil? Is this a day to save life or to destroy it?”  He looked around at them one by one and then said to the man, “Hold out your hand.” So the man held out his hand, and it was restored!”

Can you see that when the man was asked to stretch out his hand he demonstrated his faith in Jesus ability to heal him by action?

FAITH IN ACTION IS A KEY TO SEEING GOD’S POWER RELEASED.

Peter said to the lame man: “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk. And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.” Acts 3:6 b-7
